The Trying to Do Everything Hangover - How to Get Back Up

Elisabeth McMillan

The quickest way to accomplish nothing is to try to do everything.

We horse folk are extremely self-sufficient so most of us have already learned this the hard way. Still, it can sneak up on us. Last Monday was one of those days for me. I took on too much, poured effort and energy into it all and it backfired. As I was nursing my way out of my overwhelm hangover, it occurred to me to share my "get back up" process with you.

  1. Lead with kindness
When we're tired and staring up at a mountain of work, that we recently failed to climb - harsh self-talk is the worst possible strategy. It drains the very motivation we'll need to dig out. If someone we care about were in our position, we wouldn't pile criticism on — we'd encourage them. Extending that same compassion to ourselves isn't soft; it's smart.

  2. Choose one doable action and finish it.
On overwhelm hangover days, getting one thing done, restores momentum and rebuilds confidence. Choose carefully. Begin with something that has an easy reward. Don't start with a “sticky” task — you know the one, the kind that demands bandwidth, or sustained focus we don't currently have. Quick wins are the bridge back to forward motion; sticky tasks can wait until we're resourced again.

  3. Recognize the places we repeatedly get stuck — and get support before we stall out.
Support isn't always about delegation. Sometimes it's about having someone sit beside us in the hard moments — an editor who gives us a nudge when we're word-bound, a bookkeeper who demystifies the numbers, a coach who helps us sort the financial past from the financial future.

For horse professionals, this is often the bookkeeping, budgeting, or financial systems piece. These aren't signs of weakness; they're simply places where having a knowledgeable support person makes the path forward clearer and far less draining.

If the financial side of your horse business is one of those places where you tend to freeze, overthink, or avoid, our November Members Group Coaching Session is designed to meet you there — with real tools, real structure, and real people who understand the complexity of this industry.
