The Four Jobs Your Marketing Shoud Be Doing for You
Last week, we talked about five ways to capture or create worthwhile social media content — the kind of posts that actually do something for your business instead of just filling up a feed. If you've been working on that, good. Keep going.
But this week, I want to zoom out. Because here's what I've noticed after years of coaching horse professionals: most of us treat marketing as a task. Something to keep up with. Another thing on the list — post a photo, send the newsletter, update the website, repeat. And when marketing is just a task, it starts to feel like a chore that never ends and never quite pays off.
The barns and horse professionals whose businesses grow steadily — and just as importantly, retain their best clients — don't think about marketing that way. They treat it as a system. One that does four jobs at once:
- Growth — attracting the right new clients when they're ready to start lessons, lease or buy a horse, train and board, or compete.
- Retention — reinforcing value so the clients you already have stay engaged and stay with you.
- Positioning — making sure the right people understand what makes your business different.
- Brand — building the trust and recognition that makes every other marketing effort work harder.
When your marketing is doing all four of those jobs, something shifts. You stop chasing posts. You start running a system that supports your business instead of adding to your workload.
Why a System Beats a To-Do List
A to-do list approach to marketing has a built-in problem: there's no way to tell what's working. You post, you boost, you send — and at the end of the month, you mostly just feel tired. A system, on the other hand, lets you see what's pulling its weight and what isn't. That's where the investment mindset comes in.
Taking an investment approach simply means you require each marketing strategy to earn its place. If a strategy delivers a decent return on the time and money you put into it, you keep using it. If it doesn't, you adjust or replace it. Over time, you build a marketing engine made up almost entirely of things that work — and that's how a small horse business with a modest budget grows into one with real momentum.
This is exactly what the Equestrian Professional Marketing Calendar Tool in the members area is built to help you do. It's not just a scheduler. It's designed to help you plan your marketing as an investment, track the ROI of each strategy, and make better decisions about where to spend your effort next month based on what actually worked this month. If you've never used it, this is the perfect time to start. (And if you have used it but drifted away from it, this is your nudge to come back.)
Let's Walk Through It Together — May 18
This is exactly what we'll be working on in the May Members Group Coaching Session: Marketing as a System — Growth, Retention, Positioning, and Brand, on May 18 at 8:00 AM Pacific / 10:00 AM Central / 11:00 AM Eastern.
We'll walk through the four roles your marketing should be playing, how to tell which one is underperforming in your business right now, and how to start building the kind of system that quietly does its job in the background — even on the weeks when you're too busy with horses, clients, and shows to think about marketing at all.
Bring your questions. Bring the marketing problem that's been nagging at you. We'll work on it together.
